I bought a 1978 Pontiac Trans Am project car and I'm not sure which transmission it has in it.  How can I find out?

crawl under the car and the look at the transmission pan. The TH400 and TH350 have two very different pans.

The th350 has a square pan with one corner cut off. The 400 is completely different. Most likely its a th350. Could you even get a 400 in one of these cars anyone?

My bad, I miss read the question.  I thought you were asking could you even "get" a turbo 400 in one of these, as in would it "fit" in the car.
My sons car didnt come with one, but the previous owner had installed one,  so it will fit with some mods.

Well it was a rare model alright.
It started out from the factory as a 1981 car.  Somebody pulled the front end off and put a 79 front clip with the shaker hood and everything.  Then they had put a 1970 ram air 3 engine out of a GTO with the turbo 400 tranny.
A buddy of mine bought the car and drove it for a couple of years and then blew the motor up.   That was when we got the car.  I overhauled the engine, and my son drove it for a little over a year and then wrecked it.
Man that was a fast car.
