Title: TATA Y89 Restoration/Pro-Touring Build Thread (Skip to Page 9!)
Post by: TheKid on May 09, 2010, 11:48:06 AM
ALL MAJOR UPDATES BEGIN ON PAGE 9!! WITH PHOTOS

Well,
it looks my search for the perfect drive-able restoration project is coming to a close thanks to Mr. John Phillips here on the forums giving me the number to a local enthusiast. We have found a 1979 10th Ann. Edition Trans Am, primered gray, but with all original parts, good bones, and rust free.

It needs:
carpet
seats recovered, maybe new seat foam with it
paint
some minor body work
A/C compressor

Basically just small restoration stuff to bring new life back into it. I will probably also refinish the wheels depending on their condition when I see the car. It's located close to my parents house, so my dad is going to check out the car and give it a go around on Tuesday, and assuming everything checks out, I'll be making my way up Wednesday to pick it up. The owner is very enthusiastic about Trans Ams (see photos) and has been beyond helpful with this car, and has given me a GREAT price on these bones, so hopefully it can work out and turn into a great restoration over the years.
My goal is to have it 100% factory matching Y89 Anniversary Trans Am, just like it rolled off the lot. I've priced out everything, and it's not going to be a cheap project, but one well worth every penny, and I'm excited to get it started.

The motor and transmission are both very solid and pull strong, so that's a huge plus right now.

I've found that FloridaTransAm, and the website store here are great places to find the parts I need, is there any other good quality stores I can check out online?

Heres some photos he sent me of the car, hopefully it all checks out, I'm VERY excited about this..what do you guys think?

Awesome! I'm glad everyone agrees that this is a good starting, I wasn't too sure on how good of a starting point it really was, it looks like it has good bones and a good structure. The collection is amazing, can't wait to go see it in person. The guy is a great fella, and he understood my college budget and helped me out big time on this car!

Everything looks pretty clean for sure. Well put together, all original engine bay.
Just found out the front clip was completely replaced due to an accedent, I'm trying to find out how severe it was and if the frame is still straight and un molested.

Well ,my dad went and checked out the car tonight, and said hell yeah, lets do it! So i'll be picking it up within a week or two and getting this project started!! It's going to be a very long haul, and take awhile to get the car together, but in the end it's going to be great to see completed! Opinions on what I should do first, and if I got a solid deal and a great starting point are open! thanks

Cool - glad it worked out.

It really depends on your where you want it to be ... and your pocketbook - snaponbilly has a great thread about his TATA restoration and I thought there's another thread as well (my apologies, I've been "away" for a while).
Title: Re: Found one! Great restoration Y89, check it out
Post by: TheKid on May 13, 2010, 04:42:26 PM
I'm very  glad it worked out. A guy offered him to buy it, but he wanted to part it out as it's got all the original parts etc, and I wanted to finish the car and restore it, so he was much happier to hear that it was going to be taken care of. I can't wait to start, I just dont know where to start. I assume I'm going to get the rust out of the inside of the doors and get all the body dings popped out, then start on the interior, then once everything is completely done, get it painted.

Where would you guys recommend I start?
Title: Re: Found one! Great restoration Y89, check it out

Mechanicals, interior then paint & body...
Title: Re: Found one! Great restoration Y89, check it out
Post by: TheKid on May 13, 2010, 05:52:07 PM
Awesome. It's mechanically 100% sound,  not terribly worried about that. Off to interior! These TATA interior parts aint cheap!
Title: Re: Found one! Great restoration Y89, check it out
Post by: jphillips3333 on May 13, 2010, 06:51:55 PM
Well, that's what I'd do.  Others may say mechanicals, paint then interior.  They might have to paint sills, interior doors, inside trunks, etc.  I guess it depends on how far you're going with it.

I prefer interior then paint because there's always the possibility of jacking up the paint with carpet being installed, seats dragged in & out, or dinging a door on the garage wall.  It's easier to put cheap seatcovers and some old floor mats//plastic wrap to protect the interior at the paint shop.
Title: Re: Found one! Great restoration Y89, check it out
Post by: TheKid on May 14, 2010, 12:25:05 AM
Yeah, I'm doing interior first. The way I see it is if I can start doing the little things first and start seeing progress, it's going to be more fulfilling to see come together. If I wait to save up the 5,000 for the exterior work, and nothing else gets done whlie i'm saving the money, it will just be sitting, not getting worked on. I think the first thing I'll do is get the TATA carpets in, then do seat covers.

Does anyone have some advice on restoring the backs of the seats and the back arm rests? All those plastic pieces? Mine are in terrible shape, can I sand them down and repaint? Good interior paint companies with the right color silver for the TATA's? I want this to be a completely original restoration.

So, one thing I've noticed about these cars that slightly bugs me is the way they stand. Coming from the land of slammed, tucked, and spaced sports cars (BMW's), that huge amount of wheel gap between the rear fender and the top of the tire looks...off to me. Is there a tasteful way of bringing this down just a tad to close in on that wheel gap? What do you guys recommend?

Lowering springs usually works, but the exhaust maybe scraping the pavement a little ;)
Title: Re: Found one! Great restoration Y89, check it out
Post by: TheKid on May 19, 2010, 09:06:36 AM
Didn't know companies made decent lowering springs for these cars. Not sure what that does to the value of the car being a completely original number matching TATA but hey, if I'm driving it, I'd like it to look good yeah? Do the guys at Pro Touring F-Body make good stuff?
Title: Re: Found one! Great restoration Y89, check it out

You can mod it but keep the original stuff incase someone is trying to get an all original car.

Talk to Pro Touring F Body http://www.pro-touringf-body.com/  They have alot of neat stuff.

As far as value I believe you have a 403/Auto car.  While they are a desireable car the value isn't quite what a 400/4 speed car is.....yet.

With the 400 cars going up in value the 403 cars will go up later as the 400 cars will get too expensive.  Right now there are enough low mile super clean 400 and 403 cars out there that the resto cars have trouble competing, especially in todays economy.

So you can do some "bolt on" mods just keep all the original parts.  Dave at PTFB is very helpful in getting you the look you want without cutting or chopping up the car.

I keep everything and even though mine won't be close to original, if I ever did decide to go that route I have all the parts to do so.

Hope this helps!

Yeah,
Mine is a numbers matching, 100% original TATA with the 403/Auto, 73,000 miles. I'm not sure what it will be worth 100% restored to stock condition, inside and out. I'd like to do some bolt on performance upgrade eventually, once the restoration process is done. I'd like to beef up that brick of a motor that is a 403 Olds. I know they are capable of some power, it just takes some work.

Not sure if new heads, or reworking the stock heads would be the best route. I'd porbably do new heads, clean up the stock, and store them so when the time comes to having it completely stock, I can.

Also, as I am fairly new to the world of muscle/pony cars (I've been building BMW's growing up), what does it mean to "Gridle" or "full gridle" the 403?

I was faced with the same issue, stock or not stock...that is the question.  If you want performance you would be better served to pull the 403 and store it, if you damage it, there goes the value.  Get a 400 or something build it to play, then if needed put the 403 back in later.  Just my 2 cents

Well that's exactly what I was thinking about doing, it's just going to be Daily Driven for a long time. It's pretty rough right now, will cost me everything I've got and will have for the next 1.5 years to restore it , all while driving it a few miles a day, and the occasional long haul to my parents. Once I finish the restoration I'll be considering pulling the motor just to save value.

if your not going to sell it , dont worry about the value of it.  because if restored right, you'll have alot more money in it then what it will sell for.
good luck , and have fun with it.

Well,
I got the car home, finally! Put in new battery cables tonight, I'll post pics of the car tomorrow.

I have spent the past 2 hours tearing through the stacks of paperwork the seller gave me, but never really went through. It's pretty upsetting, turns out the car doesn't have 78,000 miles on it, but instead it appears to be 178,000...which doesnt make sense at all. The body is good shape, minus the seat covers. The engine is great, pulls strong and drives very well.

I have located all the previous owners and am calling them tomorrow to put together a story line, I found the very first registration tag, registered to a man born in 1931, looked him up and he's still alive according to Yellow pages! Can't wait to call around tomorrow.

Any thoughts on the high milage? That pretty much kills the value of this car...

One  reciept shows alot of head work done to the car, all new valves, 3 angle valve job, etc etc. pretty cool..
Title: Re: Found one! Great restoration Y89, check it out
Post by: N PRGRES on May 29, 2010, 06:02:15 AM
Why would that kill the value if it's in good shape?  You plan to rebuild the stock engine anyway so miles really doesn't come into play if a resto is going to be done.
Title: Re: Found one! Great restoration Y89, check it out
Post by: TheKid on May 29, 2010, 09:56:24 AM
This is true, I figured the extremely high milage would bring the value way down though. I mean, I plan to keep the car, and drive it into the ground. Once the restoration is done, it's staying with me. It looks like we'll rebuild the numbers matched 403 now also. I didnt know that high milage didnt play a big effect in a resto project..will be posting pics today, going to try and find a build sheet!

I have built BMW's for the past few years, and they are great. Nothing corners like them...and when done right, the amount of torque that little car has accelerating into a turn is a blast.

I just got in from an hour cruise in my TATA and alls i have to say is holy s#^*. When those secondaries in the q-jet open up, it's the best feeling ever. I cannot wait to have this thing together and restored! I kinda wanna build a decent hp 403 and just drop it in, but that's gonna be a good while. Interior, exterior, all the while-your-at-its....then I can focus on a new motor...

Hows your project coming dave?
Title: Re: Found one! Great restoration Y89, check it out

Mine is coming along good, cleaning floor pans today yuk.  I hope to have the frame on by monday as I have a little more work to do tomm.

Don't waste your time on a 403 other than to restore yours to stock.  If you are going to swap the motor just go with a 400 or 455 Poncho.  Olds parts are too expensive =)
Title: Re: Found one! Great restoration Y89, check it out
Post by: TheKid on May 29, 2010, 05:56:08 PM
Not many people build up the olds motors, I think it'd be kinda cool, and worth it to have the look of the 403 under the hood. Plus, it'd be a direct drop in..Doesn't the engine bay need some modifications to accept the 400 or 455's? I'm going to restore mine to stock for sure, just in a year or two ha.

Cant wait to see yours with the frame back on! My floor pans are pretty clean in the back, haven't checked up front. Gotta get the turn signal working, and figure out whats going on with my e-brake this weekend.
Title: Re: Found one! Great restoration Y89, check it out
Post by: N PRGRES on May 29, 2010, 07:35:53 PM
The 400 and 455 will bolt right in to the engine bay so no worries on that for ya.  403's are pigs without doing heavy mods to it.  If you're going to do it, go Poncho and get more bang for your buck.  I have an Olds 455 but only because thats what happened to be in the car, but if I was buying one I would have gotten a Pontiac.

You can't wait??? I definatly can't wait!

I highly suggest doing the body and paint before the interior. You can't really do thorough body and paint with the interior already in. A paint job, yes, but not a resto quality body and paint. There's alot of dirty work involved with the bodywork and paint, and I wouldn't risk doing that work with a restored interior already in place. Too easy to get to get your new parts dirty with overspray and sanding dust in the air.
The interior looks okay now, so I'd leave it be until after the exterior work. Then just be careful around your new paint while assembling the interior.
As a professional restorer for 25 years(including 57 chevys  :)  ) , that's the way to do it.

Here's a very good sequence of restoration by a shop(that's in legal trouble, so don't go there), but he does do a great job of documenting his TA restos for all to see. Look at the order of work here. Putting it on "slideshow" would be a good way to view it: http://s38.photobucket.com/albums/e120/TransformationRestorations/Adams79TA/?start=0

I agree 100%.  The interior should be last
Title: Re: Found one! Great restoration Y89, check it out
Post by: TheKid on June 02, 2010, 10:38:55 AM
Steve, thanks for that advice! The only reason I wanted to do interior first was because of price. I'm motivated by seeing things comes together, and it'll take me quite a while to afford paint an body work, where as interior I would be able to do piece by piece and watch the car come together. I like your approach better though. It wasn't a thought that I had even considered, so now that I've seen that slideshow, and heard a few other opinions, I guess it's time to start saving up my pennies and get my body work done.

Any idea what decent body work on something this nasty might run me? I'm trying to gather good information about body shops and pricing as to avoid getting ripped. Things that I know are a problem:
Rust inside the doors (due to the sweeps and gaskets all being shot)
some minor surface rust on the bottom of the door
Hood and front panels need to be re-aligned
Good quality paint job (not sure what one of those runs these days)
All the graphics placed

Theres a pretty reputable body shop here in my town that I'm considering letting do the work, I'm not sure what all this will cost, but it can't be cheap! Any ideas? Thanks for the advice also Steve and Dave!

Mine is going to run about 4 - 5K but I have a guy that does it out of his garage and does incredible work, so that might not be a good estimate.

The car was completely taken apart to nothing but a shell every little thing was taken off the car then it was hand stripped to bare metal then the inside, door jams, trunk, firewall and under side was media blasted. The car was the put into an epoxy primer then the body work began. the car gets pre assembled for fit and gap check then taken back apart to block sand, they go through and reseal the body where the factory did and then some. When done the car will be completely straight with no body panel waves at all. The shop that is doing it does concourse show cars and Custom show cars.

same thing was done to mine, by a shop, and it wasnt even half of that..... i think you are getting ripped off, and unless they are blocking the car while its together, you will have waves, what shop is doing it might i ask ?

Just pulled the A/C compressor out, going to try and find a new one to put in there, and paint those brackets and air cleaner cover sooner or later. Took a bunch of photo's too, will post later this evening.

My emergency brake is leaning against the sensor causing my BRAKE light to always be on, and possibly dragging the e-brake. I found one bolt, but have no idea how to get the others to remove the E-brake pedal. Anyone have any advice on getting that pedal off?

Wouldn't dream of it! Just going to find myself a nice A/C compressor. Theres some local guys that do nothing but part out Trans Ams, so I'll just be lookingthem up.

Ran new brake lines and new pads all the way around, hope that resolves my brake problem. The pedal wasn't coming all the way back out, and the brake lights are always on. I thought it was the Booster, but once we pulled the brakes off, we realized they were ground down pretty bad and the lines were all shot, so we'll see.

Well, my old man crawled up under the car this past weekend while I was down south, and to our surprise the subframe is painted black, no corrosion spots at all, and looks pretty darn clean and in great shape!! Minus all the red clay (if you've ever lived in GA, you know exactly what I'm talking about). I'm very happy about this! When I'm back next weekend we're going to hit it with some dergeaser and the pressure washer and clean out all the gunk and see how good of shape it really is!

Sorry for the lack of updates lately! School and work are starting to be really time consuming and tiring. Got the new Brake booster on, and I'm pretty sure that solved the whole brake problem we were having with the pedal not coming all the way back out quickly and being firm. It pretty much has to be what was wrong at this point, we've done new brake lines, new calipers, and new pads, so the booster was last in the chain. Now focusing on the dash, fixing the cigerette lighter, the clock (just the second hand works) and the one missing light bulb. Will update with some pictures in my next post!

Yeah, it was just very annoying!! I don't really know what to do with this motor either. I want to drive the car, and I want it to be my cruiser and driver, the most I have to drive is probably no more then 5 miles a day on average...and every now and then a 300 mile drive to my folks house. The motor is at 170,000 right now...rebuild the original 403 and drive on it?? I mean it made it this far, i think if it was fresh, it could make it another 160,000... thoughts?
Title: Re: TATA Y89 Restoration and Build Thread!
Post by: Nexus on July 21, 2010, 12:43:11 AM
I would drive it until it quits, then I would rebuild the 403 and give it fresh start, make it more reliable too.

if it ain't broke then don't fix it...right now that way you can still enjoy the car then maybe...I was going to say this winter but I guess you don't have winter in dallas...rebuild it then!!!

that isn't really that helpful is it?

By Dallas, my location means Dallas GA, which is right in the foothill of the Blue Ridge and Red Top, yes we have winter!! But I live in South GA now, and no, we don't have any winter ha, unless you consider 55 degrees for 2 weeks a winter. I think I'll just rebuild it later on. I don't want to ruin the block, because if the block goes out, then there goes the value of restoring this number matching Anniversary...

Well, it's been awhile, but I'm finally back to posting again. School and work are so time consuming these days. Recently, we have replaced the brake booster, which took care of the pedal sticking, I burned up the original power steering pump, so I've installed a new one, but cannot figure out why it makes a funky noise every time I try and turn the wheel, and wont turn very much at all? Might have to have a shop take a look at that one. I've also started using sandpaper to refinish the turbo wheels (take a look at page 1 to see how terrible of shape they are in). Now, I'm just at that upward stand still battle of trying to accumulate enough funds to have all the body work done and painted. I have acquired almost all the interior parts neccessary for the interior restore, just need to get the body taken care of first. Not sure how to get the cash together to afford what it's going to take on this car.

Have a few questions though:
Is the interior roof light supposed to be a circular shape or a longer shape? Mine is long with a bulb in the middle that turns on with the door open, and the two little reading lamps on each side.

Also, what color are the interior panels of the TATA supposed to be? I've seen them 100 different ways and not sure which grey goes where.

You have the correct lamp inside.  Most of the panels are the lighter grey

Man, that's upsetting Dave! Hope you get back on it ASAP!

I'm pretty much at a standstill until I can afford the body work to get the car painted and all the new seals put in so I can start restoring the interior. Bummer trying to come up with the 8,000ish needed while also paying for college ha.
Title: Re: TATA Y89 Restoration and Build Thread!

I wouldn't get too excited on the interior, it's just going to come out for the paint job, well alot of it should if it is done right, you don't want to have to do it twice!

I did just get my new upper control arms on, was nice to work on it after a 2 month break!
Title: Re: TATA Y89 Restoration and Build Thread!
Post by: TheKid on January 02, 2011, 11:35:45 AM
Yeah, very true. The company that I'm having do the restoration on the body is an old highschool buddies dad's restoration shop, so they're willing to help out and do what it takes. I'm just going to send them the car how it is, then when I get it back start on the interior. It's terrible right now.

I know that feeling! I've had to leave the car at school while I'm at my folks house for Christmas, can't wait to get back and finish fixing my power steering. Can't figure out why it's making this God awful noise.
Title: Re: TATA Y89 Restoration and Build Thread!

Alright, been awhile for awhile. School and work have been killing my time. So far I've since fixed the power steering squeal problem. The pump was just out of line a little bit. Nothing a few shims from Lowes couldn't fix.

Brought the car to a friends restoration shop and now waiting (patiently of course) for my quote to come back, that's the next major project to tackle. In the mean time, I'll be trying to figure out what's going on with my Quadrajet. Giving me all sorts of problems!!

Hey guys, not sure if anyone was following my build, or would start following now, but I'm finally back in the saddle! Got a new (And much higher paying) job as of October, and finally have a steady source of income to devote to my "Trans Am Restoration Fund."

So far I'm about 1/2 way there on the savings for bringing the car into the shop (C.A.R.S. in Atlanta) and couldn't be more excited. By the looks of it the car will be moving into the shop in mid-April if things at work keep going this way. Now that I have a better source of income, the plans have changed a little bit too:

Pulling original 403, rebuilding and storing
Building: Stroker RA IV clone (still thinking)
Rear End: Regearing the rear (Researching a good ratio to keep it street-able)
Resto: Getting a more thorough restoration job done now (Frame off/nut and bolt)
Interior: Having the shop do interior (Before I was going to do it, would rather have professionally done). I've got every interior piece ready to go too, just need to be painted! (Original GM NOS parts for the most part, dad's been hording them in the garage back home.)
Audio: Mapped out the speakers (If it's going to be fast and loud, why not make Billy Squier's "The Stroke" sound great too?) I want to do 2 UnderCover speakers under the rear seats, nice big 6.5's with huge magnets in the deck, and get the tweeters under the dash fixed, of course complete with a CB (Gotta love South GA) and a whip. Along with fixing my power antenna.
Suspension: Also, I miss the handling of my BMW M3, and I know Ill never get it out of the TATA, but I'm going to get as close as possible! The plan is to go with the Comp Kit from Pro-Touring F Body.

This is my plan as far as getting this car exactly where I'd like it within a few years. Hopefully by the time I graduate from this school, I'll have my dream car built and ready to enjoy life!

I've got my work cut out for me, but I think I can swing it, and will eventually have a gorgeous, fast, great handling TATA that is built just how I want it. Now, back to work!

Critiques/suggestions always welcome.

Hopefully I can get the few folks that were following this build to jump back on!

Make sure you put a tennis ball on that whip antenna, never was sure why people did that but it was big back in the 70's.  My question, if you're just going to tear a tata apart, why not just get a regular car?  Seems like it is already numbers matching.  You could easily just get a roller to look like a TATA and not kill an original.
Title: Re: TATA Y89 Restoration and Build Thread!
Post by: TheKid on February 28, 2012, 09:04:10 AM
I'm not necessarily tearing it apart, I'm just preserving the numbers matched components that I have to uphold its value (When I do want to put them back in) and wanted a lot more power out of this. Kind of want to build an "ultimate TATA" while keeping all the stock parts to just have to drop back in.

What the heck happened to your car Dave? I didn't recognize ya with out the name.

Decided to go another direction, I have a house now and a soon to be family when my GF moves in, in June.  I just don't have time for that level of restoration so I sold it.  I have a roller project now, great car, just needs some refreshing rather than a whole rebuild.

Alright, just a quick update. I came into a little extra cash a few days back, and thankfully am in a position right now where every bit of it could be put towards my Trans Am Fund (Fraternity dues paid, house bills paid, tuition and books paid!!). I have a friends Santa Fe (NEVER buy one) in the work shop right now for a full engine overhaul and should be finished by Tuesday at the latest! That being said, I'm going to get my new tires mounted up on the TATA and get it wheeled into the work shop this next weekend. We're going to begin stripping down the front end (Needs to be completely replaced from the bumper to the doors), and get to work pulling the motor also. Before it gets on the trailer for it's ride to C.A.R.S. in Atlanta, it looks like we're going to do all the suspension work here before hand. Why not? We're in there anyway.

Got to talk to Dave still, but it's looking like the Comp Kit from PTFB along with new body mounts and the subframe connectors is the first task. I miss the handling of my old E36...Will keep everyone updated as deconstruction starts. It feels so good after 2 years to finally be able to start restoring this car!

Just to make sure I understand this right before I get rolling on major things, as far as interior colors go:
Everything gets the lighter gray, except the dash?

A Pillars, T-Top trim, all interior trim, rear inside quarters, and console all are light gray

From the dash down, Kick panels etc get the dark gray?

I've been looking for high quality interior pictures with correct paint numbers so I don't muff this up!

Thanks Dave will be giving him a call next week. Got the barn all cleaned up, and the trans am in! I did have a pretty bad mishap though. On the way to pickup a friends Jeep for a new project car, I shredded my back tire and it completely destroyed the entire rear passanger lower quarter. Kind of a bummer...but I guess I'll just add that to the list.

Got most of the interior pieces out this week. Will take pictures next week when I can steal my girlfriends camera! There's virtually no rust on the floors or pillars, just need a little work. Trunk has very light surface rust. All in all, I'm pretty happy. Body panels will start coming off next! Pictures to follow (finally)

Started to work on the front end also so I can get ready to pull the 403 out:

Then stripped to the core support, but broke too many of those rusted metal clips and hit a stand still for the evening at about midnight:

(http://farm9.staticflickr.com/8003/7138862489_90ede1a6cc.jpg) (http://www.flickr.com/photos/76495204@N05/7138862489/)

I'm still working on getting the fenders and good off, then the rest of the core support. Also got to get the rest of the interior taken care of.

I'm planning on towing it to the paint/body/restoration shop in about 2 weeks to do all the body work. While it's there I'm going to have the TH350 rebuilt, and start tearing down the motor. I'm at a stand still on the motor though. The shop can do Crate motors, installed for 3,000ish. So I might go with this option instead of putting the 403 back in, but keeping the 403 to maintain originality. It's all up to the wallet.

I'll post more pictures after tonights work. Thanks for looking!

After a very long day in the office, my boss and I both managed to wiggle some time away from our girlfriends and make our way out to my workshop. Here's what progress we've made tonight. It's coming right along!

(http://farm8.staticflickr.com/7193/7140991613_cae29146e8.jpg) (http://www.flickr.com/photos/76495204@N05/7140991613/)

The next few days will be devoted strictly to cleaning up and getting all my save-able parts labeled and stored.

Hope you guys are enjoying my build as much as I am!

Got the motor and TH350 out the other. My girlfriend went to her parents house, and took her camera with her, so no photo's until the end of the week!

Started tearing into the 403 and have started acquiring parts for the rebuild. Got a set of '72 350 heads on the way.

Will post a huge photo update later this week!

Glad you guys are following! Here's a bit more to add on to the story:

So I got the engine and transmission pulled out, without any help or a balance bar. It was a PITA and real hot in South GA, but I got it right out after a little love. Here's a shot of the empty space:

(http://farm6.staticflickr.com/5324/7231102044_5ba1014c47.jpg) (http://www.flickr.com/photos/76495204@N05/7231102044/)

Looks so lonely! Can't wait to get the fresh built, 500 ft/lb torque monster back in there.

A shot of the original transmission and intake manifold (I'm going to clean up that intake so I've still got all the original stuff what folks ask)

(http://farm6.staticflickr.com/5333/7231093436_3a4eb9c248.jpg) (http://www.flickr.com/photos/76495204@N05/7231093436/)

Engine on the stand, all accessories, valve covers, valley pans etc removed:

Had a little "help" tonight with pulling some of the head bolts from the girlfriend, she's not bad with a wrench! :

(http://farm8.staticflickr.com/7232/7231088776_ab07ee5f3e.jpg) (http://www.flickr.com/photos/76495204@N05/7231088776/)

Finally off, flipped the motor over, and went to work on the underside. We got all but 2 pistons out before calling it an early night:

(http://farm8.staticflickr.com/7230/7231114964_9ce13ed829.jpg) (http://www.flickr.com/photos/76495204@N05/7231114964/)

Lots of good work on the motor got knocked out, the tear down is almost done! After this evening, this is where the project sits as of now. I'm still piecing all my new engine components together and ordered my new custom grind roller cam setup this afternoon.

I'll have more updates tomorrow night when I get the rest torn down, thanks for following the build!

Very cool my friend. I'm doing the same thing to my TATA. Curious to see where you go with yours. Also, if you need any pics of the way it looks from the factory, mine has 48K OE miles on it, and is in excellent condition (I know, you're asking yourself why did I tear it apart?). I have lots of pics if you need them....  ;)

I'm not at all curious as to why you tore it apart, as it's going to be one mean TATA when you're done! Thanks for dropping in and following, it feels like Chipper Jones coming to watch me play little league! ha.

Got my custom grind in! It's an Erson Roller Cam, cam cards final specs are:
Lobe separation angle: 110+4

Intake Closes: 71
Exhaust Opens: 82
Exhaust Closes: 33

Valve Lift: .544 on both intake and exhaust

These specs are at 110, not .050. I'll put the .050 if ya'll want.

Here's some photos:

The overall quality of this camshaft is flawless and beautiful. Cannot wait to get it in the motor and run it. Visually it looks great, no nicks, scratches, machine debris or anything. I highly recommend Erson and PBM.

That's it as far as the cam goes. Any questions, please feel free to ask! Anyone using a roller camshaft in the future remember you MUST buy a cam button to keep the cam from walking!

I have started restoring the pulleys and brackets on this car as well. New or restored ones from a parts supplier are upward 200 bucks! I restored these with a TON of elbow grease, and $8 rattle cans. I'll be posting a step by step that I use with photo's in the Restoration section when I start the next set of brackets:

Billy, I feel your pain! Paying rent, tuition, fraternity dues, beer, and to top it all off building a Trans Am (which is where the beer comes in....) makes it go really slow in the funds department! Just trying to work with what I've got for now. The 403 is going to be great and worth every dime though!

Well, today and tonight have been somewhat depressing but also joyful! Spent the first half of the day on the phone with the shop making sure they had room for me. Spent the second half tracking down a trailer (Sometimes living in a small town sucks), and the third half getting the Trans Am ready to roll, and loaded up. Here it is 1 AM and it's finally all loaded up. My barn is empty, and the Trans Am will be leaving my possession for the first time since I drove it 400 miles from North GA over 3 years ago. I guess it's great that it's finally going! Just sad to not see it out front anymore.

Anyway, enough of my blabbing, here's some pictures!

Forgot I took the interior out...and we needed a driver, so this was the best we could come up with ,here's my fraternity brother and roommate "driving."

Me and one of my childhood best friends, my "little brother" in our fraternity,  and favorite buddy to work on cars with. We've been working on cars since 17 years old with our first rides and he's helped me with this car every step of the way (I'm the SHORT one by the way):

For the first time since I bought the Trans Am, it is no longer out in my driveway or workshop! It's now sitting up at a family friend's restoration shop in Marietta. Took some fun pictures of the travel there and back yesterday. I left South GA at 8, got home around 2:30 AM, driving a grand total of 646 miles! Here's some pictures from the fun:

Ready to head on out in the morning, about 7:45 :

Freaked me out a few times rolling up I-16 wondering who was about to rear end me! Then I realized...it was just my car:

Made it through downtown Atlanta around 11:30ish AM or so, no traffic! :

Pulled into the shop, and to my excitement saw my long time high school buddy's old Tonka truck parked out front. His dad owns the business, and the shop manager is now driving this truck. It is a highly modified (luxury mods that is) Ford F-150. If you can name it, this thing has it going on inside, we lived it up in highschool in this truck!:

And here's the last two sights I had of my favorite thing I've ever owned. Next time I see it...well who knows what it'll look like! C'ya!:

I had terrible timing and managed to hit ATL in rush hour, which made for a very unpleasant ride but downtown is always a decent change of pace from the backwoods:

Passed my old high school hangout! Spent many and many summer days right here at The Ted:

Got south of Atlanta, and swung by Summit and picked up some ARP rod bolts, they had a great car on display!

Finally, back to my country back roads and no more traffic:

I made it home, 646 miles and 19 hours later! It was a blast, got to visit my family, sister, and girlfriend as well. Dad met me at the shop. Going to miss my car, but now I can focus on building this engine to put back in it!

I'll keep the updates coming a lot more steady now as well. Going to miss not having this car out in my workshop:

Alright guys, finally got around to getting some good work done and taking pictures of everything I've been working on, story time:

Started working on the back seats first, got the upper and lower frames stripped down, polished them up, primed a few good coats, then hit them with black Rustoleom to protect them in the future:

Seat Frames:

I took these down to bare metal, cleaning and removing all the crap, paint, and pounds of rust

Upper:

Lower:

Knocked out all the springs as well, got them cleaned and painted and stored away in a box.

Then moved on to my seat which was rusted BAD to say the least. I was able to clean it up pretty well though..

Here's where I got the top half of the driver's seat down to:

Nice and polished, ready for primer tomorrow.

Got the bottom to look alright as well, also getting primed tomorrow:

Almost finished:

I moved onto the sliding brackets and mechanism. Got the 40 year old pounds of residual crap build up out of there, wire brushed and lubed all the joints, and polished up the rest of them. Didn't spend too much time on the parts that won't be visible once it's all assembled, but just wanted them to look decent. I hit them with Duplicolor clear coat once I was done to help prevent them from rusting out again:

And that's all the work I got done the past few days. I've been helping my girlfriend move all weekend, and was just too tired to do much. On the upside, she got me these two little things as a "thank you."

She just saw this at hobby lobby and knew exactly what it was, and to check and make sure it was an official "GM" product:

Anyway, thats all for tonight. Will have more pictures tomorrow! I've been working on my spare tire after seeing how nice Ben got his to look.

Bringing this guy back from the dead. Changed careers mid-build. I went from making great money with plenty of disposable income as a kid, to a new career for a start up (that has since led to me progressing big time in that field and now working for the industry leader) and finally able to get back into this thing. And boy have things changed. The shop doing the work relocated and I went broke while starting the new career...so the car went into storage. It's been primed and ready to go though. Getting an update tomorrow, can't wait.

Also, I'm bringing the 403 back to stock, and holding onto it. I caught the FI bug...and I'm thinking it's time to just build an LS platform and be done with it. I really want to drive this car, and not beat up the 403...

Anyway, if anyone here is still around, I'll have some updates sooner or later. Can't wait to get back into this thing...and get all my parts out of my storage unit.
