Title: warning buzzers
Post by: screaminchickin on August 13, 2011, 05:28:38 AM
Hi,think my 79 firebird should have two warning buzzers one for the seat belts and one for the key left in ignition is that correct?.Well neither of them work is there some very simple checks i can make to see why they dont work and where would the buzzers be situated, not very good with electrical stuff but if there is something simple i can check that would be great many thanks.

My car has only one for the key, the seatbelt has a light its supposed to work by grounding out and turning off the light when buckled.....

Not sure about the early cars, but the later cars indeed have two buzzers. They are little box-shaped plastic items under the dash. The key buzzer should have two terminals, and the seatbelt buzzer should have 4 terminals.

Sometimes the key buzzer contact gets worn or removed inside the column. After you ensure you have both buzzers installed (many times they're removed b/c people find them annoying), open the driver's door and push the key in the ignition. When I got my 80, it had a bad contact so it would only buzz if I actually pushed the key against the ignition (lol). If that doesn't work, you can pull the steering wheel and lockplate behind the wheel to see if the buzzer contact is installed.

I'm not sure about the seatbelt buzzer wiring. I believe it ties into the seatbelt dash indicator light on the speedometer, but someone with a wiring schematic can probably better elaborate on that.

I think it (the seatbelt buzzer) has a built in timer. If you turn the key 'on' after sitting, it buzzes for eternity it seems. If you shut the key off after it buzzes and do it again, it won't buzz at all (or will for maybe a second). I believe it is something that heats up or whatnot if I recall an older post here or on TAC.

Hi,ok had a good look under the dash today[got a bad back to show for it  :'(].Pretty sure there is no buzzer's under there and could only find two plugs that were not pluged in to anything.

Could any of these be for the buzzer's,^^this one looks like it would maybe fit the silver one that 4SPEED posted a pic of.

no its kinda the same way the seatbelt buzzer is, just hangs, a small piece of tape holds the wiring together for the two so they hang in the same spots.....

Now i gotta drop the hush panel, just curious, weird it doesn't show the buzzer in the manual. mine wont buzz, you have to press in on the key, something's off. Years ago i thought i pulled it when i yanked the seat belt buzzer, but it's there.

prob the contacts on the inside of the column.......

prob the contacts on the inside of the column.......

Either that (the contacts do wear over time) or a worn key and/or lock cylinder. My 80 had a really really worn copied key when I got it (so far gone that you couldn't decipher the original biting) and also needed the key pushed on before it would buzz. Replaced the lock cylinder and mine buzzes as it should now (never replaced the column contacts)...and yes, annoys people if the keys are in and door is open. Got to love loud old buzzers!

It never has worked unless you push in the key, tonight when I took the car out I didn't even notice the seat belt buzzer, now i'm thinkin it doesn't work!

the seat belt buzzer i have, both of em actually, is very very quiet....almost a hum instead of a buz, and that was bench tested with a 12v battery......

I have a "new" GM seatbelt buzzer thats, what I would say, a normal volume. I had a really faint key buzzer in the car, but it lacked the stereotypical "BZZZZZZZZZZZZZ" associated w/old cars so I acquired another and, well, it is loud. LOL. Probably the loudest original buzzer I've ever heard.

EDIT: An interesting tidbit...the 69 and early 70s GM cars (at least many of them) had the key buzzer under the hood (it also was combined with the horn relay I believe). Talk about an interesting noise...hearing a buzz from under the hood! First heard that on a friend's 1969 GTO.

Just got my ebrake light to work was just a bulb blown and my high speed fan works now just a dirty contact, great when you get these little electrical things to work again ;D just waiting on my buzzers now so i've got something to shout at "SHUT UP" ;D.Just another question, would not having the seat belt buzzer in stop the seat belt light from working, the bulb was ok for that.

I like the key buzzer. It's kept me from locking the keys in the car a few times.

My seat belt buzzer had not worked since I bought the car 9 years ago, which was fine with me. Then a couple weeks ago, it just decided to start working. THAT was annoying  :) .

I had to check mine the other day, it works, it's not that loud, so why did in annoy me back in the 80's, I just gave one to ta oz, so people in other countries can be annoyed too! ;D

Perfect timing for this thread! I just got a parts car that had both the ignition buzzer and the seatbelt buzzer!! I hooked them up to my 80 and like others have said the key warning buzzer is finicky but the seatbelt buzzer works pretty good. HOWEVER the "fasten seatbelt" light went on and does no go off when I buckle the belt even though the buzzer stops. Any idea why that would be and how to fix?

I can't remember when the buzzer was out of my car what the light did, the buzzer has a timer in it, maybe a bad buzzer?

I'm going by memory here, but I believe the light only runs off a timer but the buzzer shuts up if the belt is buckled OR if the timer elapses. So technically you can buckle your belt, start the car, hear nothing but still see the light.

Yeah that part totally works, but the light never goes off. In fact, sometimes the light STARTS off, but then comes on after I've buckled. Other times it's always on. But it never goes off :(

I looked at the video again, when you put the key in on my 78, it has a clicking sound, always did.
