Engine code not found
« on: May 22, 2007, 04:46:35 PM »
I couldn't find this engine code in the Hitman's list. This is the motor in the 1979 Firebird Esprit I'm thinking of transplanting to my 77 TA. Can you tell me anything from these pictures? I don't find the Y4 engine code listed. It has headers Holly double pumper and an aluminum Edelbrock P4B manifold.

According to what I found, it's either a '73 400 or '74 455.  I looked it up at:

Or it could be a '72 455. What is the date code on the rear of the block next to the distributor? Should be a letter and 3 numbers. The last number will be the year and that along with this info will tell you what it is.

Oh, and that Holley isn't a Double Pumper. That's a 750cfm vacuum secondary. Actually that wass probably one of Holley's biggest selling carbs for steet engines.

That's it! "I" = Sept. "13", 197"2" is the build date. I believe that would make it a '73 400 being built that late in the year.

I see the Y4 can also be a 72 455. Whats the cutoff date between 72 and 73?
